A wonderful woman in our community shared her beautiful artwork with us from her new book titled ‘(Leda), Transcendence’.
Rachel shared some words with us:
During my experience on MA Illustration and Authorial Practice course at Falmouth University I have been focusing my work on empowering women through personal concepts whilst examining the role of trauma in their stories.
I have delved into themes of female oppression and silencing within fairytale and myths, such as Leda and the Swan, highlighting narratives of lost voices.
The concertina book I made is a collaboration between myself and local poet Candice Orwell.
I read one of her poems in a book titled Voices from the Deep which is an anthology of poetry from a diverse group of writers with shared experience of surviving domestic abuse. Candice’s poem really resinated with me and I contacted her to see if she would be interested in writing a few verses alongside my paintings.
It has been really empowering and cathartic to have our voices heard through poetry and through art – a visual language to share and hopefully empower other women.”
Her limited edition handmade books are for sale at £25 each.
